I posted a job ad yesterday and got 10 replies overnight.

Almost all of them were copy-and-paste messages that began with:

– Hello
– Dear, hello
– Good day
– Hi, my name is…

Then, they listed age, years of experience, personality traits, work history etc.

I skimmed each reply, but nothing really stood out to me.

Why? Because almost every single applicant spent the entire email talking about themselves!

In my ad, I had mentioned my current pain points, job requirements, my name and a few questions at the end for the applicant to answer.

The applicant who stood out the most?

The one person who wrote, “Hi Jackie” and the words “your ad” in the first sentence.

So simple, right? She also answered my questions from the ad (many didn’t, probably because they never read until the end).

She addressed my specific pain points with relevant experience.

It probably took her 5-10 min to write a personalized email, and it immediately made her stand out and increased her chances for an interview.

The next time you reply to an ad, or send a cold email, make sure the first sentence (your headline!) is personalized and addresses your reader and their needs.
