Comedians obsessively study and research their audience. *Then* they write their jokes.
Most importantly, they test their jokes over and over at smaller venues. They tweak or cull the ones that fall flat.
By the time they perform on the big stages, every line is a hit and the audience is laughing their heads off.
As marketers we tend to think we can just strut up on the big stage, say anything and the audience will just eat it up.
